International Power Industry Conferences

■ The 2011 East Asia Electric Technology Research Workshop

Taipower hosted this workshop from September 20 to 22. Thirty- seven papers were presented, of which 16 were from Taipower. There were in total 75 participants from the country and abroad.

■ The 23rd CRIEPI/TPC General Meeting

As the 3-11 Fukushima incident caused a great impact on the nuclear power generation industry, the safety and protection of nuclear power plants has become a critically important issue that power companies worldwide should study and solve. This meeting was held on September 19, 2011. Discussion topics were specially focused on the civil structure anti-seismic measures for nuclear power plants, distributed renewable energy power generation systems, the evaluation of effectiveness for wind power and solar power for power utilities, CO 2 geological storage technologies, etc.

International Cooperation Activities

■ Honduras

The Technical Cooperation Contract between ENEE (Empresa Nacional de Energía Eléctrica) and Taipower is entering its 34th year. Up to the end of 2011, Taipower has dispatched 152 specialist to Honduras. Taipower sent personnel to assist with the task of evaluating ENEE’s hydro power units from March 15 to April 4. The friendship between Taipower and ENEE was further enhanced.

■ Japan

● Tokyo Electric Power Company, Inc.(TEPCO)

1. A Seven-council-member delegation from Kazawaki City (Niigata Prefecture), under the arrangement of the TEPCO, visited Taipower’s 1 st Nuclear Power Plant on October 28. After listening to Taipower’s speech on “once-through nuclear fuel cycle”, the council members took a plant tour and exchanged views with Taipower personnel.

2. On December 20, Mr. Toshiro Kudama, Executive General Manager of the International Affairs Dept., paid a courtesy visit to Mr. G.M. Chuang, Vice President of Taipower, and discussed the subject of countermeasures after the Fukushima incident.

● Chugoku Electric Power Co., Inc.

A Taipower delegation led by Mr. H.S. Lee, President of Taipower, visited Chugoku Electric Power Company on November 28. An exchange of opinions regarding power cables and transformer management, operation of thermal power plants and other relevant issues took place.

● Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc.

A Taipower delegation led by Mr. H.C. Hsu, Vice President of Taipower, paid a 4-day visit to the Chubu Electric Power Company that began on November 14. Discussion topics included tsunami protection in nuclear power plants and the development and application of a smart grid.

■ Korea

Korea South-East Power Company (KOSEP)

A 12-member delegation led by Mr. Yong Soo Lee, General Manager of Engineering Dept., Yeongheung Thermal Power Site Division, KOSEP, visited Taipower from September 27 to 29. The 4th Technical Exchange Meeting was held with the personnel from the Dept. of Generation, the Taichung Thermal Power Plant and the Tunghsiao Thermal Power Plant. An exchange of opinions and experience took place, focusing on the operation and maintenance of ultra supercritical units, maintenance of opposite wall type boilers, handing of sub-bituminous coal and other related issues.

■ South Africa

The 23rd Cooperation Conference between ESKOM (Electricity Supply Commission) and Taipower was held in Taipei from November 4 to12. Discussion topics included photovoltaic, water and air quality monitoring, training program, etc. The delegation visited hydro, thermal and PV power facilities. Exchanges were also made regarding operation experience and technologies.
